[UK Digital & Analogue Platform Penetration
/ Multi-channel homes]

subscribers.

Brief Commentary: BSkyB started with an existing analogue customer base and much of the growth was converting them to a digital platform. This is now almost complete and the company expects to switch off its analogue service in the coming months, a good year ahead of the original plan. The cable companies similarly are converting analogue customers but commenced the process later and they had more technical challenges in converting the variety technologies from the myriad of cable companies that were acquired. They now appear to be making good progress although their churn rate, at 20%, is twice BSkyB. ONdigital (now called ITVdigital) had no conversion but neither did it have an established customer base. The slow take up is due to poor marketing.
We define multi-channel homes as those with subscription channels in addition
to the free-to-air channels.
Depending on the subscription package, these homes may have access to 100s
channels plus pay-per-view
movies and sports events.
