B4U (Bollywood for You) is an Indian company aimed at the UK's south Asian community. It will be accessible via cable.
Digital Broadcasting Company (DBC), established by St. James Investment Partnership, launched a £30m digital pay-movie service in 1999. Persons TV Division has a 12% stake and Deutsche Bank was also an investor. One channel was Udirect. In 2 years of trading 800,000 movies were purchased giving an income of £2.4m. It was available on BSkyB. Udirect had the rights to the England World Cup qualifying match against Finland and this upset many football fans who needed to subscribe to BSkyB and pay a fee to see the match. In April 2001 it talked of a £50m flotation but by August 2001 it was bankrupt having been unable to raise further funds.
Discovery Communications is the US programme provider of the Discovery wild life and nature programmes. It is now branching out into life style channels with the US launch of its Health Channel and then a UK launch in June 2000. These channels will have linked web sites. Links with the BBC has created the BBC America channel. SkyDigital is a major retailer of their channels and after 14 years Discovery Communications is very profitable. These profits are used to both create additional channels and entry into new geographic markets. With future audiences being fragmented across many digital channels, Discovery is staking out as many channels as possible. Discovery is part owned by TCI. More recently ONdigital has signed up for 2 exclusive channels.
Ealing Studios is to be transformed into a digital studio, bringing together a community of skills and like-minded people.
Eurosport
| E! Entertainment Television is a Los
Angeles-based cable and satellite network that wishes to break into the UK
market. It is owned by Walt Disney (39%) and several US cable networks including
Comcast (40%). It broadcasts celebrity interviews, talk shows, news, movies,
comedy and fashion to 50m cable and satellite viewers. It also broadcasts
to Latin America and Spain. It already provides programmes to BSkyB.
The Money Channel is founded by ex-pop star Adam Faith. The channel, which started broadcasting on SkyDigital in January 2000, targets the ordinary 'man in the street' and aims to demistify money. In May 2001 it ceased trading. See under interactive services. Medical Channel launched at the beginning of June 2000 with the well known former BBC TV news presenter Martyn Lewis as its front man. The channel, that has investment from BSkyB, is aimed at the UK's 35,000 general practitioners (primary care doctors), health administrators and other health workers. Doctors surgeries will receive free equipment to receive the satellite channel. Programmes will include daily medical news, current affairs and clinical developments. It will also carry adverts for prescription medicines, something which is prohibited on public channels in the UK. A complementary web site is also planned. Now.com, or Network of the World, is a multi-channel information and entertainment portal being developed by Pacific Century Cyberworks (PCCW). Founded by Richard Li, the son of the Hong Kong tycoon Li Kashing, it came to fame when it purhased Hong Kong Telecom from Cable and Wireless for £20bn. Now.com is negotiating to purchase the internet rights for the Wimbledon tennis and plans to offer television coverage over the web. Besides sport, Now.com will also provide lifestyle and fashion channels. It has a partnership with Trans World International, the holder of one of the world's biggest video libraries with 130,000 hours of programming. Now.com is based in London. On Demand Management is a consortium of cable companies set up to negotiate with the large Hollywood studies for the rights to broadcast movies on near demand. Oxygen Media is a media company aimed at women using the internet (Oxygen.com) and cable TV. It has purchased 3 women's web sites from AOL. Oxygen is led by Geraldine (Gerry) Laybourne who was previously President of Disney/ABC Cable Networks. Simply Money, launched in January 2000, aims to make money sexy for the masses. It will run 24 hours continuously with much material repeated every 3 hours throughout the day. Teletext Ltd provides the teletext service on the commercial channels of ITV and Channel Four and is developing a service for ONdigital. Viacom is a major US media group with interest in TV (MVT, Showtime and Nickelodeon), internet (MVTi which groups MTV.com, VH1.com and Sonicnet.com), video rental (Blockbuster) and movies (Paramount).
Viacom recently announced that it was merging with CBS in a deal worth $36bn. It also has plans to float its internet operations early in 2000 to raise funds for the expansion of its music television business. |

Zone Vision provides material for thematic channels throughout Europe. For example, its Reality TV provides fly-on-the wall documentaries to eastern Europe. In March 2000 it announced its intention to float on Nasdaq.
365 Corporation, a provider of Internet sports content, is well placed to offer its content to interactive TV and mobile 'phone companies.
